Open source content management partnerships are a promising sign
The tide may be turning in favor of open source software for content management. Last month Computer Associates (CA) announced it was establishing partnerships with Zope and Plone, two open source content management organizations. CA is also releasing its Ingres database, which will be available as a repository for Zope and Plone, as open source. We asked Zope and Plone what the new partnerships mean for the open source community.

Initial Royal Artillery Recruitment Training at Oswestry and first deployments 1940

George Johnston was called up on Sept 12th 1940 into the (R.A.(A.A.)) (i.e. Royal Artillery (Anti Aircraft)). (Note in sequel 'Ack' was the British shorthand for 'A', cf. US 'Able', which got introduced as well as the Americans couldn't say the British system).

He did the two month initial training at Oswestry (Sept/Oct 1940) to form a new Battery (the 366th Battery). (George was with this Battery until he managed to escape to become a gunnery instructor. ((Later the 366th Battery arrived in Europe at D day plus 2 hours: the battery had little to do, and their 3.7s were used as Field guns. They had no casualties for a long time, until they started mine clearance activities.)) ) (The weather was very warm: hot weather with no rain, and the earth was like iron.) The first fortnight was basic military discipline, square bashing and the like, though some of that continued every day. The rest of the time they were trained as gunners, to form a new battery. To speed the training they were tested in different abilities: the basic split was between instrument operators and gunners (i.e. between intelligence and the heavy brigade). George went into the instrument section, which divided into rangefinder operators and predictor operators (gun control side). George became a No1 Predictor Operator, so he controlled the Predictor team, which may have had something to do with him being promoted to Lance Bombadier (1 stripe) in the 8th week. The course covered aircraft recognition, a lot of PE, and the theory of gun control. There was some teaching about guns but not much, and how the instruments affected the guns - the predictor was directly connected to it.

Placed vs. Dynamic Content

As any content management practitioner knows, there's a hundred ways to "skin a cat," or, in our case, implement a Web CMS. This can lead to heated -- but healthy -- debates about the best ways to display content on specific pages or areas of a website.

About Content Management

Broadcasting is changing. Reach to TV is falling, especially amongst 18 to 24-year-olds. But total consumption of media for this supposedly fickle audience is not: it's just they're getting their entertainment elsewhere - five hours a week on the net in Broadband homes, around the same on Playstations. For broadcasters, to reach them, multiplatform is not a nice to have, it's a necessity.

CMS Conference
Cignex, the deployment leader in open source consulting and software services, will host the open source CMS industry’s largest gathering of open source experts at the Goldegg Packaging Sprint, at its Santa Clara headquarters, from November 7-11, 2005. Founded and funded by Cignex, the Goldegg initiative brings together one of the largest groups of open source experts and innovators in the content management (CM) industry to make the open source Plone CMS a viable alternative for enterprise CM.

The Santa Clara session will assemble 17 top developers from 13 companies and three countries. The goal of the session will be to establish a package distribution method that will lower the total cost of ownership for businesses that use the Plone stack for enterprise CMS. “By the end of the sprint, we will have developed a methodology that makes it more efficient and economical for enterprises to deploy CMS applications based on the open source Plone stack,” explained Kapil Thangavelu, open source evangelist, Cignex. “We will be dramatically streamlining what is currently a time- and labor-intensive process.”
